To the End of the Land – David Grossman

 

I waited a long time to review this book because this story is unique enough that it stretched my comfort zone and held my attention. Personally, I needed to let some of it sink in, as well as feel the feelings it stirred.Being a human being I empathized with the worry and grief that Ora felt toward her son’s service in the Israeli army, though I was not in touch with all of her ways of dealing with her anquish. There are certainly cultural differences, Americans tend to turn to chemistry to mask our feelings, other cultures often work though emotions in more organic ways. Also, not being a mother, the frequent references to the mother/child breast connection was something I couldn’t quite relate to but the worry for a beloved in harm’s way is universal.

The book is written with superb attention to detail and successfully delves into the perspective from both male and female points of view.

This is a powerful story that deserves to sink in before review. I highly recommend it.
